“A sense of place is the feeling evoked whilst being in or thinking about a particular place. As a landscape painter, I am not particularly concerned by the specifics of a place, such as landmarks and topographic features that make it easily recognisable, instead, it is the atmosphere, light, colours and experience that inspires me the most.
With Edmund Burke in mind and in the tradition of the Romantic painters, I spend a lot of time meditating upon the notion of ‘The Sublime’, in awe of nature as I walk through the landscapes of North and West Norfolk, watching the tides, studying the sky and taking it all in, as a witness to something greater than myself. It is this sense of place that is my deepest source of inspiration, the atmospheric nuances that resonate long after I’ve returned to the studio. Sunsets, sunrises, wild coasts and windswept marshes, nature is the greatest muse.”
