In this course, Richard will help show how gouache can be used as a powerful medium for capturing evocative and atmospheric interpretations of the landscape. A much-misunderstood medium, gouache is perfect for a variety of techniques that help convey a sense of depth and spontaneity. Working from both source material and intuitively, Richard’s techniques focus on placing atmosphere and a sense of place over detail and form.
In this course Richard K. Blades will be exploring the possibilities of using a limited palette to better understand color mixing and its applications in expressive landscape painting. It will help unlock the mysteries of color in a simple but effective process that requires no previous knowledge of color theory. Basing his approach on a three color (plus white) palette, we will be discovering the use of color triads for creating mood and variety within expression.
In this course, we will explore creating mixed media land and seascapes using Oil Pastel, Gouache and mixed media. With a focus on mark making and spontaneity, this is an in depth exploration into loosening up and finding freedom in combining media. Great for sketchbook work and development but equally useful for creating larger works.

With a focus on the dynamic and expressive Oil sketches of Constable, the course will look at the importance of looseness and mark making in landscape painting and how we are able to see and approach both studio and en plein air painting.

With a focus on the atmospheric landscapes of Turner’s late work, the course will look at the importance of abstraction in landscape painting and how we create atmosphere and depth.
